Athletes & Events - Junk food sponsorship

Sports hero's accepting massive payouts (£2 Million in this first example) to advertise junk food & sugary drinks- Is this Ok ?...We'd love to hear your views, leave a comment at the end

Ingredients in Pepsi: high fructose corn syrup, sugar, colorings, phosphoric acid, caffeine, citric acid and natural flavors.

Recent research regarding high fructose corn syrup has demonstrated that this ingredient increases inflammatory responses within the blood stream, puts more strain on the pancreas than glucose alone and increases the triglyceride levels within the blood, a risk factor for heart disease! High phosphoric acid levels increase the need for buffering the pH of the blood and have negative effects of calcium reserves. Some studies have shown that teens who drink an average of 3 cans of soft drinks a day have a 5 times increased risk of bone fracture.

David Beckham's spokesman defended his association with the brand with the following statement:

'Pepsi is a legitimate company which acts responsibly and satisfies both EU and Ofcom regulations regarding advertising to minors.'

Ingredients in Walkers Crisps (Cheese flavour): Potatoes, vegetable oil, cheese and onion flavour [onion powder, lactose, flavour enhancers (*monosodium glutamate, sodium guanylate), cheese powder made with animal rennet, wheat maltodextrin, flavouring, colour (annatto)], salt. *They don't even hide the MSG!

The only study performed to date on monosodium glutamate intake in relationship to obesity was published in 2008. The study showed that msg intake was associated with increases in overweight and obesity even when total calorie intake and activity levels were factored out.

Gary Linekar has spoken to the press and it turns out that he blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight, and says that crisps have no effect on children's weight. "The main point people are missing is that today's problems are nothing to do with snacks like crisps," he said, before adding "The issue is that many people are simply not exercising."

Gary Lineker's management company responded by saying that "crisps are a useful source of energy and form part of a balanced diet alongside food such as vegetables and fruit." - Food Magazine article

Not forgetting large sporting events allowing sponsorship  from big junk food & drink brands.

Ingredients in Robinsons Drinks: Glucose, fructose syrup, sugar, water, Citric acid, colour (carmine), sodium citrate and preservatives. (Aspartame and acesulfame K are also found in kids fruit shoot)

It is not likely the recipe for Robinson's has remained the same since 1935 especially now that modern sweeteners like fructose syrup and asparatme have been added. Fructose has already been briefly reviewed above. Aspartame stands on record as being the most complained about food additive of all time to the US Food and Drug Administration. One review of the scientific literature by Ralph G Walton looked into 164 separate studies on aspartame. Of the 90 non-industry sponsored studies 83 identified one or more problems associated with aspartame intake. Of the 74 aspartame industry sponsored studies all 74 determined there were no problems associated with aspartame intake!

The first 3 ingredients are all sugars!!! - Why do we have an obesity crisis???
